Looks from Burberry Prorsum, Prada, Gucci, and Givenchy Spring/Summer 2016
With the recent legalization of gay marriage in all fifty states and massive influx of trans-people coming forward, gender is a hot topic of discussion. Major designers are responding to this cultural and political phenomenon by blurring the lines between male and female attire. During the spring menswear season, pattern, shape, and fabric, typically associated with womenswear, were used to outfit androgynous male models. It may seem strange, but this new feminization of menswear proposes the question: if “borrowing from the boys” is considered a trend for women, shouldn’t the boys be able to get in on the fun? While some ensembles should not dare be attempted off the runway, its nice to see innovation and an overall playfulness put into men’s clothing. And who knows? Maybe in a few years Gucci’s macho pussy bow blouses and Givenchy’s rugged ribbed-knit skirts will be the new normal. After all, it takes a real man to rock pink…or a floral motif.
