With most small screen stars opting for boring gowns, the Emmy’s red carpet is typically the most dull of all the award shows. However, these three leading ladies proved that Television stars don’t always have to play it safe. Kiernan Shipka looked magnificent in a cropped Dior Haute Couture frock over chic trousers. With a unique silhouette, sumptuous embroideries, and a sunny hue, the Mad Men star’s ensemble struck just the right balance between daring and playful. Taraji P. Henson worked the red carpet in a gorgeous Alexander Wang number. The sheer skirt was sexy, but it was the sculptural bodice and chainlink straps that made her custom gown badass enough for Cookie Lyons (Henson’s character on Empire). Kerry Washington looked absolutely flawless in a shimmering Marc Jacobs dress that sashayed down the designer’s Spring/Summer 2016 runway just three days prior. Her stunning ensemble was both sexy and elegant. To put it in simple terms: Washington stole the Emmy’s red carpet.

These three stars took major fashion risks on the Emmy’s red carpet, but sadly all of them failed miserably. Claire Danes looked awful, dressed in an ill-fitting Prada mess. Her gown was neither curve-hugging nor voluminous, but an awkward middle point that distorted the actress’s slender physique. The thick chains holding this disastrous ensemble in place felt too edgy for her prim hair an makeup. January Jones’ Ulyana Sergeenko jumpsuit drowned the Mad Men star in an overwhelming amount of fabric. This oddly enough because the heinous turquoise shade and random starfish pin made her look like the only ugly mermaid in the sea. The most atrocious ensemble of the night goes to Heidi Klum in Atelier Versace. This three-in-one gown turned the supermodel into a slutty Big Bird working the corners of Sesame Street. Only one word can describe this look: ugh!
