One of the reasons I often loath the Oscars red carpet is the lack of excitement or innovation in each gown; celebrities tend to veer away from these qualities in favor of dull looks that will remain classic throughout time. Well this year, actresses, along with a handful of musicians, struck the perfect balance between daring and subdued, leading to many memorable moments that won’t make them cringe twenty years from now.
Rooney Mara in Givenchy Haute Couture, Margot Robbie in Tom Ford, and Naomi Watts in Armani Prive
We can always count on Rooney Mara to bring a hearty does of “capitol F” fashion to any red carpet her designer heels walk on. For the Oscars, the waif-like actress went for an oh-so chic Givenchy Haute Couture frock crafted from white lace- a perfect complement to her edgy demeanor. Mara’s gown had a decidedly Victorian feel, but a diamond-shaped cutout and modern center slit brought it up to 2016. Margot Robbie, everyone’s style crush at the moment, looked like a life-sized statuette in golden Tom Ford. The discreet snakeskin print and plunging neckline enhanced her blonde-bombshell looks. Naomi Watts does old-hollywood glamour better than anyone else in the industry, but her Armani Prive ensemble was probably her best red carpet moment to date. The intricate sapphire blue and purple embellishment elevated her gown’s simple silhouette and glittered beautifully as she walked. Mega-watts of Bulgari diamonds provided extra sparkle on film’s biggest night.
Although some hit it out of the park on the red carpet, these ladies missed big time in horrible dresses we can barely look at without furrowing an eyebrow. Word to the wise: fire your stylists.
Heidi Klum in Marchesa, Kerry Washington in Atelier Versace, and Reese Witherspoon in Oscar de la Renta
Heidi Klum can’t catch a break! The former model and reality tv show host somehow finds herself on everyone’s worst dressed list award show after award show. This time, Klum mistakenly picked a lilac chiffon gown by Marchesa that swallowed her body whole. An oversized sleeve and garish flowers made the whole ensemble feel childish, while her hair looked sloppy as if she just came from the gym. I know you were going for effortless perfection Heidi, but, at best, you get tired Disney princess. Kerry Washington, a usual style star when it comes to award shows, hit a fashion road block at the Oscars. Her Atelier Versace number resembled a DIY evening gown made of black Duct tape and bed linens. While she is still a goddess in our eyes, this was a dress sent straight from hell. Attention all celebrities: we should never see another thigh-high slit on the red carpet unless it’s chic and middle-parted a lá Rooney Mara. Another huge let-down came from Reese Witherspoon in a plum hued Oscar de la Renta. The trumpet silhouette, which could have been quite alluring, was completely lost due to an ill-fitting skirt- a faux pas the de la Renta atelier should be expected to fix.
