How Pigtails are Dominating the Summer Beauty Game

Marni, Miu Miu, and Chanel Spring/Summer 2016

It takes something incredibly spectacular to break the internet- Beyonce, a relentless innovator and queen of all things pop, was destined to accomplish such a stunt. When the video accompaniment to her controversial Formation anthem dropped, it spread like wildfire, adding a new, visually stunning layer to the musical madness. While Bey’s choreography was as fierce as ever, her plethora of dramatic ensembles are what truly stole the show- especially an off-the-shoulder black gown paired with strands of diamond necklaces. Peaking out from underneath her oversized hat, which covered half her face to dramatic affect, were two long braids that seemingly went on for miles. As she whipped and twirled them around, we couldn’t help but lust after her on-trend do.

Thankfully, pigtails are not just for preschoolers to tug at on the playground anymore. This ultra-chic style is everywhere, and in new, more sophisticated iterations. It stormed the catwalks, dominated the red carpets, and can easily be spotted on the streets. Celebrities and cool girls alike are loving the version Beyonce demonstrated: middle parted with two, neatly-tied french braids. It’s both edgy and youthful; sort of an up-scale take on the milkmaid. Models at Miu Miu, Chanel, and Marni donned sleeker versions of the pigtail. Top hair gurus backstage tied them low, starting just at the nape of the neck, and finished the look off with pin-straight locks. Go for coquettish allure by adding bows, or even a tiara. If you gravitate toward the minimal, try the style sans ties and wrap a piece of hair around each pigtail. Either way, this childhood favorite remains effortless and easy- a perfect way to ring in summer fun.
