Fall and winter are the two seasons, in which we can fulfill our desires for opulence. Cashmere throws, monstrous fur coats, weighty embroideries- these, as some would say, “trivial” pleasures become necessary amid the bitter chill. That’s why this season we are embracing the lusciousness of velvet in a myriad of gem tones. Velvet may be the fabric of queens and kings, but Fall 2016 saw it draped, tailored, and sculpted into the most enticing silhouettes. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia- the Oscar de la Renta alums taking the fashion world by storm with their startup label Monse- deconstructed the fabric in sophisticated, yet entirely contemporary dresses and gowns. Go for baroque in rich hues like violet or dark green offset with sleek heels and shapely bags. For those inclined to office settings, a matching velvet suit will be the power duo of your cold weather wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to work it into overtime, sporting it about town for after-hour drinks. Velvet is nothing new; in fact, its got quite a significant past. However, designer’s breathed life back into this uber-touchable fabric, and sometimes bringing back an old favorite is what really gets us excited for the start of a new season.
