Spring 2017 Trend Alert: Pink Nation

I am often asked, “What is the must-have color this season?” To which I respond, “There isn’t one specific color.” Though this is a completely unsatisfying answer to the inquirer, someone who would like nothing more than to be on-trend, it is almost always true. There is typically a school of colors that are identified by magazines and stores as a trend. Pastels, metallics, neutrals, and neons, for example, have all had their turn as the hottest hues of the moment. Spring 2017, however, differs in that there IS one standout color that absolutely everyone is wearing: Pink.

You might think that pink’s rise in popularity this season might be strange. With its connotations of frail, stereotyped femininity and this being 2017, a year when everything in relation to womanhood has to be seen as empowered, pink is not the obvious choice, but it definitely is the right one. Designers ranging from Sies Marjan’s Sander Lak to Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga didn’t merely send pink lace baby-doll dresses down the runway- they did what they do best, they innovated. Pushing the color to its extreme, they cropped, sliced, twisted, enlarged, and draped their luxurious fabrics to create looks with undeniable strength and sheer beauty.

So if you’re not a girly-girl, don’t worry because you’re in luck. Go for striking in head-to-toe pink- simply vary hues to ensure you don’t resemble a bottle of Pepto-Bismol. An over-sized fuchsia t-shirt, for example, looks a bit grittier when paired with a metallic blush mini. This season, prepare to paint the town pink.
