Forget Valentine’s day, mid-February means one thing: New York Fashion Week. The entire international fashion community has descended on Manhattan, and the runway shows of America’s brightest talents are in full swing. Let’s be honest, though, while the collections present a great idea of what’s to come, the real action is on the street. Just outside of fashion week’s busiest venues, models and influencers alike are giving us the very best style inspiration for right now.
It is only day three and we can already tell that a hat is the it-accessory to complete your look. There are two types in particular that savvy show-goers are sporting: the newsboy cap and the beret.
1. The Newsboy Cap
Once a uniform staple for early 20th-century working class men, the newsboy cap is now the object-du-jour for fashion’s glitterati (oh what a difference one century makes). It has officially replaced the floppy, wide-brimmed hat as every downtown girl’s go-to topper. Pair with messy tendrils for an effortless, on-the-go vibe.
2. The Beret
After Maria Grazia Chiuri sent a parade of leather berets down the Christian Dior runway last year, demand for the style is insatiable. Berets have been spotted on some of the most famous heads in the industry- from Rihanna to Alexa Chung. This season, the streets of New York City are flooded with fashion week attendees bringing a little French girl flair stateside. Make the beret modern by styling it with graphic pops of color.
